Interesting Facts About Ramayan

According to Valmiki Ramayan, Lord Ram was born on the 9th day (Navami) of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra, Punarvasu Nakshatra, Kark lagna and the planets Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus were very high in position. Lord Ram was 25 years old at the time of exile.

वाल्मीकि रामायण के अनुसार भगवान श्रीराम का जन्म चैत्र मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की नवमी तिथि को पुनर्वसु नक्षत्र में कर्क लग्न में हुआ था ।

During 14 years of exile, Lakshman never slept. He had taken this vow so that he could serve Ram and Sita without fail. Due to this, Lakshman is also known as “Gudkesha” which means “one who has conquered sleep”. 

१४ वर्ष के वनवास काल में लक्ष्मणजी एक बार भी नहीं सोये । राम के प्रति सेवा में वह कोई कमी आने नहीं देना चाहते थे । निद्रा पर विजय प्राप्त करने कि कारण लक्ष्मणजी का एक और नाम गुड़ाकेश पड़ा । 

Bharat was not that far in terms of renunciation. While Ram was in exile, Bharat looked after the administration of Ayodhya as Ram’s representative. However, he renounced all the royal opulence and lived the life of a hermit in the nearby village of Nandigram. Bharat knew that Ram sleeps on the floor, so he dug a 2 feet pit and slept in it. Ram used to eat kandmool (root vegetables and tubers). So Bharat used to collect grains from the cow’s excreta (gobar) and eat it.

त्याग में भरतजी कुछ कम नहीं थे । राम के वनवास जाने पर वह केवल राम के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में अयोध्या का राजपाट सम्हालने लगे । उन्होंने सम्पूर्ण राजसी सुखों का त्याग कर दिया और नंदीग्राम में एक साधु के समान जीवन व्यतीत करने लगे । इतना ही नहीं, वह जानते थे राम भूमि पर सोते है, अतएव भरतजी भूमि को २ फूट खोद के सोते थे । राम कंदमूल खाते थे अतएव वह गाय के गोबर में बची हुयी अन्न को धोकर उतना ही ग्रहन करते थे । 

This is a well-known fact that Ravan abducted Sita to avenge the humiliation faced by his sister Surpankha at the hands of Lakshman. But, very few are aware that Surpankha was secretly harbouring a desire to take revenge for her husband Vidutjwa who was murdered by Ravan. She knew that she would not be able to kill Ravan alone. So, when she heard about Ram, who had killed demons like Tadka, Subahu, etc, is residing in Dandkaranya forest, she plotted the whole act of proposing Ram, getting humiliated and provoking Ravan to abduct Sita.

सभी जानते है कि लक्ष्मण द्वारा शूर्पणखा की नाक काटे जाने से क्रोधित होकर ही रावण ने सीता का हरण किया था, परन्तु यह कम ही लोग जानते है की स्वयं शूर्पणखा रावण से अपने पति विधुज्जिह की हत्या का प्रतिशोध लेना चाहती थी । वह स्वयं रावण को नहीं मार सकती थी इसीलिए जब उसने सुना की ताड़का, सुबाहु, आदि राक्षस को मारने वाले श्रीराम दंडकारण्य में रहते है तो उसने किसी तरह राम और रावण के बीच शत्रुता बढ़ाने की योजना रची । उसी योजना के अनुरूप वह राम के पास विवाह प्रस्ताव ले गयी और लक्ष्मण के हाथों अपमानित हो कर रावण के पास लौटी । 

The stone bridge to reach Lanka (Ram Setu) was built in five days. On the first day 14 yojana, on the second day 20 yojana, on the third day 21 yojana, on the fourth day 22 yojana, and on the fifth day 23 yojana of the bridge was built. The total length of the bridge was 100 yojana and the breadth was 10 yojana. One yojana is equal to 12-15 KM.

लंका जाने के लिए समुद्र पर पुल बनाने में पाँच दिन का समय लगा था । पहले दिन १४ योजन, दूसरे दिन २० योजन, तीसरे दिन २१ योजन, चौथे दिन २२ योजन और पाँचवें दिन २३ योजन पुल बना था । इस प्रकार कुल १०० योजन लंबाई का पुल समुद्र पर बनाया गया । यह पुल १० योजन चौड़ा था । 

Hanuman had freed Shani Maharaj from the prison of Ravan. In order to express his gratitude, Shani Maharaj granted a boon that devotees of Hanuman will never be bothered by Shani’s vakra drishti (crooked vision or evil eyes). 

रावण के बंधन से मुक्त करवाने के कारण शनि ने हनुमानजी से प्रसन्न हो कर यह वचन दिया था की जो कोई हनुमानजी की भक्ति करेगा उससे ऊपर कभी भी शनि की वक्र दृष्टि नहीं पड़ेगी ।
